Andy Sullivan beats Charl Schwartzel in SA Open playoff
Posted on January 11, 2015 2 Comments
Coming into the 104th South African Open, Charl Schwartzel was the consensus favourite in his home country thanks to a weak field and after three rounds, it certainly seemed like he was going to grab his tenth European Tour win after building a five shot lead over Matthew Fitzpatrick, but he couldn’t hang on, losing in a playoff to Englishman Andy Sullivan.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we end the series with a look at Rory McIlroy.
The History
From an early age, Rory McIlroy was planning on life as a golfer, even if he didn’t know it at the time. His father Gerry was a good player in his own right, playing off of scratch many years ago and it was his love of the game that got Rory started, as he would take his son to the local course in Holywood as often as he could, and even then, Rory wanted to go more often. Much like Tiger Woods, Rory would go to bed with a club in his hands, using the correct grip until he fell asleep.

The History
I’m going to go on the assumption that I don’t need to go through a history of Tiger Woods, so let’s just take a quick bird’s eye view here of his results. Since his last major win at the 2008 U.S. Open, Tiger has:
- Played in twenty major championships.
- Missed six majors due to injury.
- Won 17 times worldwide.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Bubba Watson.
The History
Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson is known these days as one of the best players in the world, but it was a long journey to the top of the game for the Bagdad, Florida native. Watson turned pro in 2003 and while his prodigious power was on display from the start, it took him seven years to get his first win, defeating Scott Verplank and Corey Pavin in a playoff at the 2010 Travelers Championship. Later that year, he found himself in a playoff against Martin Kaymer at the 2010 PGA Championship, but after being even through the first two holes, Watson ended up short in the hazard on the par-4 18th, allowing Kaymer to lay up and secure his first major win.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Henrik Stenson.
The History
Considering where he’s fallen in his career, it seems like a miracle that we’re talking about Henrik Stenson as a major part of golf heading into 2015. After a steady climb up the ranks, Stenson finally broke through in 2006, winning twice on the European Tour and playing in his first Ryder Cup. He followed that up with another two wins in 2007, the second of which came against Geoff Ogilvy in the WGC-Match Play and vaulted him into fifth place in the Official World Golf Rankings, which at the time, was the highest a Swedish born player had gotten in the OWGR. He played for Europe again at the Ryder Cup in 2008, and then won the PLAYERS Championship in 2009, overcoming a five-shot deficit to Alex Cejka and everything looked like it was on the right path.

After a successful high school and college career, Patrick Reed turned pro in 2011 and earned his PGA Tour card at Q-School ahead of the 2013 season and with his wife Justine on the bag, he was able to get his first win at the 2013 Wyndham Championship, defeating Jordan Spieth in a playoff. Reed followed that up by setting the PGA Tour record for most strokes under par after 54 holes when he fired three straight 63’s at the 2014 Humana, eventually winning by two over Ryan Palmer, but Reed was really just getting warmed up.

After turning pro in 2006, Jason Day failed to qualify for the PGA Tour but won his first tournament on the Nationwide Tour in 2007, becoming the youngest player to win on the tour, helping him finish fifth on the money list. In 2010, Day won his first tournament on the PGA Tour, taking the Byron Nelson Championship and in 2011, Day shot 64 on Friday at the Masters and ended up just two shots behind the eventual winning score of Charl Schwartzel.
