How to improve the Ryder Cup
Posted on September 17, 2014 2 Comments
The Ryder Cup might be the best event in golf. For three days every two years, players and fans representing the United States and Europe show emotion that you rarely see in golf, and while most don’t get as crazy as Ian Poulter, there’s a vibe and atmosphere around the event that is pretty special. The event isn’t as heated as it used to be, see Seve/Azinger for just one example, but you can tell that these guys really want to win for each other and their country. Even in the events that seem to be one-sided, the Ryder Cup always just seems to deliver something memorable. Hell, I’m Canadian with no rooting interest in the event and I’m pumped for this thing every two years.
With all of that said, it’s not perfect and I think if there were some simple changes made, we could see the Ryder Cup become an even better event. Here are three suggestions that I think would greatly improve the overall experience.

As we get ready for the final tournament of the 2013-14 PGA Tour season, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have managed to become part of the “story” even though neither will be playing this week at the Tour Championship at East Lake. World number one Rory McIlroy did his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, and towards the end of his availability, he was asked about the potential changing of the guard in golf without Tiger and Phil in the field this week. His response is below, courtesy of ASAP Sports.

Watson goes with familiarity for Gleneagles

None of the six captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup are wrong, at least not yet. The six players selected by European and American captains Paul McGinley and Tom Watson, were for the most part, not surprises and none of them are bad players. What they are though, at least when it comes to Watson’s American side, are predictable picks of familiarity, and really, the American captain had little other option.

Instead of following my usual recap style, I’m going to go with more of a broken up style list of takeaways thanks to the amount of noteworthy events that took place all week.

That was fun, wasn’t it? After three pretty lacklustre majors from an excitement standpoint, the weekend at Valhalla was incredible, especially on Sunday when it seemed like after the rain delay, we had non-stop action for six hours. This one’s going to be tough to top.
