Colin Montgomerie and the importance of majors

Colin Montgomerie did something on the weekend that many people thought was utterly impossible: he won a major championship. Granted, it was a senior major, but the very thought of Monty winning one after all these years, and after so many chances on the main tours, is still noteworthy. Not only did he win, but he won it while playing in the United States, something else that he had never accomplished despite 41 worldwide victories in his impressive career.

Rory McIlroy won the 2014 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth this morning after a roller coaster week that saw him call off his impending wedding to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, admitting that he had no idea what to expect this week and that he was just hoping to find some sanctuary inside the ropes at a course that at the best of times, he’s disliked strongly since turning pro. Over the next few days, you’ll likely read or hear that the reason he was able to win this week was because he was emotionally free after ending the relationship.

After the Masters, I think I look forward to the Ryder Cup more than any event in golf, and the good news is that we’re only four months away at this point from the 2014 version at Gleneagles. With that in mind, I’m going to periodically take a look at the standings and how things shape up for captains Tom Watson and Paul McGinley.

The current standings are listed below, with clickable links to each player’s match play history. Just as a reminder, nine players will qualify for each the American and European teams on points, with Watson and McGinley selecting three players each to fill out the remaining spots on the roster.

Why you should watch the 2014 BMW PGA Championship

I watch a lot of golf. This should surprise exactly nobody who has read this blog in the past, and especially if you follow me on Twitter where I pretty much talk about golf 24/7. Chances are that if you’re reading this post, you like golf as well but perhaps you don’t pay a ton of attention to the European Tour. That’s fine, and I totally get it as a lot of the fields are pretty weak and for most people, there’s a certain amount of golf that they can watch in a week, and that usually means the PGA Tour broadcasts fill up that allotment.

Now, the PGA Tour is at Colonial this week for the Crowne Plaza, and it should be a pretty good event with a solid field, but I’d like to encourage all of you to take in this week’s BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour and I’ve got a few reasons why.
