Golf GIFs of the Week: January 20th

Miguel Angel Jimenez with the wink to the camera.

Miguel Angel Jimenez with the wink to the camera.

Well, that was an interesting week of golf, wasn’t it? Rules violations, Phil and Rory climbing the leaderboard in Abu Dhabi, another win for Patrick Reed and Pablo Larrazabal finally got back in the winner’s circle. The best part is that we have what appears to be another great week ahead with Tiger and Phil playing at Torrey Pines, as well as another loaded field in Qatar on the European Tour.

For now though, let’s take a look back at the week that was through GIFs and photos.

Patrick Reed hangs on at the Humana

Patrick Reed didn’t end up winning by as much as he probably thought he would, but he was able to hang on to win the 2014 Humana Challenge.

What Happened

Reed entered the day with a massive seven shot lead, the kind of advantage that would be nearly impossible for a PGA Tour player to relinquish, and early on, it looked like it would be a romp as Reed started with an early birdie. However, a run of birdies and bogeys would ensure that Reed stayed pretty much even throughout the day, prompting the Golf Channel to show a stat that at one point, Reed was the only player in the top-30 on the leaderboard that wasn’t under par.

Larrazabal edges Mickelson and McIlroy in Abu Dhabi

Pablo Larrazabal made a birdie on the last hole at Abu Dhabi GC to edge Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy to win the 2014 Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.

What Happened

Larrazabal entered the day three shots back of the lead held by Craig Lee, and he did what he needed to do early with birdies on two of his first four holes. He would bogey the fifth, but another birdie on the front made had him going out in 2-under par. McIlroy and Mickelson were also 2-under on the front, while Lee wasn’t as fortunate, going out in 2-over par and a double bogey on the 11th pretty much took him out of the running.

Mickelson had the lead after a birdie on the 10th, but gave it away on the 13th after incurring a penalty for double hitting his ball, leading to a triple bogey seven. Three birdies in the last five holes gave Mickelson a chance, but Larrazabal made a five footer for birdie on the 18th to give himself a one-shot win over Mickelson and McIlroy.

Rory McIlroy penalized under “stupid rules”

After Sergio Garcia saw himself in a rules flap yesterday in Abu Dhabi, Rory McIlroy faced a similar issue after Saturday’s third round.

According to McIlroy, he had to take a drop on the second hole at Abu Dhabi GC when his second shot landed in the rough, but in the spectator crosswalk, to which he is allowed to take relief. He took his drop and played his shot onto the green, but he was told after finishing on 18 by Ricardo Gonzalez’ caddie Dave Renwick that in Renwick’s opinion, one of his feet was still on the white line, indicating that he didn’t take full relief before playing the shot. McIlroy then grabbed a rules official to examine the situation, and when the two went back to look at the divot, it was obvious that McIlroy’s feet couldn’t have been anywhere else but on the line, and as such, he was given a two-shot penalty. What appeared to be a one-shot deficit and a final round grouping with leader Craig Lee has now turned into a three-shot gap and an earlier tee time for the world’s seventh ranked player. Full explanation below from the European Tour’s John Paramor:

Fred Couples hits lava and makes eagle

7120084221_6271c17a61_z

There’s always been something about Fred Couples. The easy going nature, the silky smooth swing and his ability to just seem cool, especially compared to his boring contemporaries, made him a fan favourite for his entire career on the PGA Tour. Being pretty good at golf helped too, I’m sure.

Couples plays mostly on the Champions Tour these days, and is a favourite to win pretty much any tournament he enters on the 50 and over circuit. In Friday’s opening round at the Mitsubishi Championship, he did something that seemingly only Fred Couples could pull off.

Yes, that’s Fred Couples playing a ball off of lava and making eagle. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Sergio Garcia’s latest controversy

When I mentioned in my 2014 Golf Wishes post that I’d hoped that Sergio Garcia would make headlines for his play and not his mouth, this wasn’t exactly what I was referring to.

For those who are unaware, Garcia is playing this week in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, his standard year opening event. On the 18th green, which was Garcia’s ninth of the day, he appeared to tap down a mark of some kind. You can see the video below:

The whole scene is very reminiscent of the rules flap that Simon Dyson was embroiled in recently, which I’ve covered on a pair of occasions, so obviously the European Tour was going to investigate when they were alerted to the situation, allegedly from a call-in viewer.
