Harrington wins, Poulter loses and GIFs of the Week
Due to a variety of factors, I didn’t get much of a chance to watch the coverage of the Honda Classic, so I’m going to skip doing a full recap of the event since I don’t really feel like I watched enough but before we get to the GIFs of the Week below, I do have some quick thoughts.
Harrington wins: Coming into the final day at PGA National, there was clearly no better story than Padraig Harrington trying to win his first PGA Tour event in nearly seven years but with the quality around him, it seemed like a longshot at best, but I’m happy that it happened. Harrington’s a great character who has by all accounts, worked his ass off to get everything back together and the way he did it was impressive too. Sure, the guys in front of him collapsed down the stretch, but he came from way back there and survived rinsing one on the 17th to force a playoff with Daniel Berger thanks to the putt below.
Golf seems better with Padraig Harrington around, so hopefully Monday was a sign of things to come.
Ian Poulter: Getting people to sympathize with Ian Poulter will never happen, but as I was sitting at work periodically checking in on the Monday finish, it sounded like Poulter was going through one of the worst things a golfer can have happen: a completely random and unexplained loss of his game. For most of Sunday, Poulter looked like bug eyed, Ryder Cup Poulter but he wasn’t doing it with his putter like normal. Instead, he was striping just about every shot that he hit until he flat shanked one on the 6th.
He got it back on the next hole and started out just fine on Monday before putting another four balls in the water and looking inexplicably lost on the course. Think about the fact that he put five balls in the water in his final round and only missed the playoff by a shot and maybe you do have a little sympathy for Poulter. No?
Moving on.
