Golf needs more match play

Finland’s Mikko Ilonen was able to outlast Henrik Stenson on Sunday at the London Golf Club to win the 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship for the first time. It’s his fifth win on the European Tour, and he’s going to get a lot out of this, including a sizeable jump in the Official World Golf Rankings, which will go a long way to seeing him tee it up at the 2015 WGC-Match Play in a few months at Harding Park.
Unfortunately, that event isn’t until the end of April, which means that between the PGA and European Tours, we have a ton of time and events before the next time we see match play, which sucks because it really is a lot of fun and it does break up the weekly stroke play monotony that golf gets itself into frequently.

The 2014 Volvo World Match Play Championship goes this week from the London GC in Kent with a solid field including Graeme McDowell, Henrik Stenson and American Ryder Cup star Patrick Reed. Below I’ve compiled the records in match play for each of the sixteen players in the field. Just click on the player to be taken to their full record.
Note that based on my information, Alexander Levy has not played in a match play event as a professional.
How to save Olympic golf

Over the last few weeks, I was able to go back and forth with freelance writer Shane Ryan on the problems with the current setup of golf in the Olympics in 2016. Shane proposed that the format should really follow a World Cup style draw with teams of two based on the Official World Golf Rankings and I volunteered some help with assembling the groups.
Shane pitched an article around this concept to Golf Digest, and it was posted on Saturday.

Hey, did you know that the new PGA Tour season starts this week?
After a LONG seven day offseason, the 2014-15 campaign kicks off at the North Course at Silverado in Napa, California with the Frys.com Open. If you recall, Jimmy Walker used this event last season to pick up his first career win on the PGA Tour and he’ll be back to defend his title this week. What can we expect this season on the PGA Tour? I’ve put together a quick preview and answered some questions below.

Oliver Wilson was able to get his first career European Tour win on Sunday at the Alfred Dunhill Links. It was a long time coming for Wilson, who has put up nine career runner-up finishes on the European Tour and actually lost his card a few years ago. See the best from the week in GIFs below.
What went wrong for Team USA at the Ryder Cup

For the third consecutive Ryder Cup, and eighth of the last ten, Europe was victorious over Team USA and it wasn’t really close. In the aftermath, people have been pointing their fingers in a variety of directions in order to find out who to blame for this mess, but in reality, there isn’t one single person or entity to pin this on. When Jack Nicklaus suggested that the Ryder Cup change to invite all of Europe in time for the 1979 competition, the wheels of change were set in motion and what used to be an easy win every two years has now evolved into a chance at competing.
It’s gotten to the point where players like Phil Mickelson are openly complaining about the process during the event, with other players like Billy Horschel and Jason Dufner chiming in on Twitter from their living rooms about what needs to change. What went wrong for Team USA at the Ryder Cup? Just about everything, and to pin this on one individual is not only a mistake, but part of the larger scope of what’s actually wrong when it comes to this event. News flash to all involved with the Ryder Cup this year: you’re all part of the problem and here’s why.
