Matt Jones defeats Matt Kuchar in Houston playoff

Matt Jones was able to defeat Matt Kuchar in a playoff on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour win at the Shell Houston Open.

What Happened

After getting within one of Sergio Garcia’s lead going into Saturday, Kuchar really took control of the tournament on the weekend when tee times had to be moved up on both days thanks to threatening weather in the Houston area. Garcia struggled on Saturday to a one-over par 73 in tough conditions and Kuchar took advantage, carrying a four-shot lead into Sunday’s final round. There were instances where Kuchar looked a little loose on the course and it appeared that he might open the door for a few players, like he did last week in Texas, but for the most part, he kept it together until he got to the 18th. While on the tee, Jones did this on the 18th green:

Paulina Gretzky’s Golf Digest cover

Paulina Gretzky is a good looking woman. Golf Digest is in the business of selling magazines and subscriptions. These two are undeniable facts, and so it stands to reason that putting Gretzky on the cover of Golf Digest, scantily clad with a loose affiliation to golf, would be a good business move for the people at Golf Digest.

2014 Masters Preview: Holes 7-18

Unfortunately, I haven’t been keeping up with posting my hole by hole previews here on this blog, but they have been continually posted at theScore. Click on the link here to see all eighteen holes.

Once again, I’d like to thank Jeff Mingay and Scott Johnson for helping me out with these posts. I’ll have more Masters coverage next week, both here and at theScore.

The future for Tiger Woods

When Tiger Woods withdrew from the Honda Classic a few months ago with a back problem during Sunday’s final round, him skipping the Masters never entered my mind.

When he struggled through his final round at Doral, looking like the world’s oldest 38-year old, it was obvious that he was hurt but that he was going to finish out, likely in some act of defiance, as if he was proving to people that he was tough after pulling out in his last start. Even still, him not appearing at Augusta never entered my mind.

Yesterday at theScore, I took a look at the first three holes at Augusta National in previewing the 2014 Masters. Part two went up this morning, examining holes four, five and six, and we’ll finish the front nine tomorrow.

Also, expect some thoughts on Tiger Woods not playing at Augusta shortly.

It’s hard to believe that we’re only a week and a half away from the 2014 Masters, but it’s true. I’m planning on doing some preview material on this blog, but I was asked to help out theScore with some of their Masters coverage, and the first post just went up, previewing the first three holes at Augusta National.

Fortunately for me, I was able to enlist the help of some very talented people to assist me in this project, starting with Scott Johnson who helped out with the making of the GIF flyovers that you’ll see for every hole, and respected course architect Jeff Mingay was kind enough to lend his thoughts regarding each hole from an architecture and design standpoint.

More to come later this week, but feel free to check out the first three holes right here.

Steven Bowditch wins in Texas

What Happened

Steven Bowditch carried a three-shot lead into Sunday at TPC San Antonio, with Matt Kuchar and Andrew Loupe being the closest competitors to the 30-year old Australian. Conditions were going to be tough at the course on Sunday though, with heavy winds expected and considering that two of the three players in the final group had little to no experience in winning at the professional level, Sunday promised to be a back and forth day at the top of the leaderboard.

Graeme McDowell and being taken out of context

Graeme McDowell is one of golf’s most intelligent and engaging personalities. In a game that is often referred to as dull and boring, the native of Northern Ireland seems to have a ton of fun out on the course, and along with that, he brings a perspective that is thoughtful and sorely needed in a time of media training and canned responses.

All of this may have changed yesterday.

Adam Scott may not have closed the door on Sunday at Bay Hill, but Matt Every’s victory made things pretty exciting down the stretch at Arnie’s Place. Here are the best GIFs, photos and videos from the last week in golf.

Matt Every wins at Bay Hill

What Happened

Adam Scott entered the day with a three-shot lead over Keegan Bradley, and right from the very beginning of the round, it looked like the reigning Masters champion just didn’t have it. Bradley didn’t either though, and that combination opened the door for a couple of players, but it quickly became apparent that it was down to one of those in the final group and Matt Every.

When Scott really started to struggle, Every jumped out to a three-shot lead, but looked to be in trouble on the par-5 16th. After pushing his drive right and into the trees, he attempted to advance his ball but ended up directly behind another tree. He would eventually bogey, opening the door for Scott and Bradley, who both hit great approaches into the green, setting up eagle chances. They missed those putts, but Bradley would tap in for his birdie after Scott somehow missed the short one coming back. Every meanwhile, went to the 17th tee and sent his ball into the greenside bunker, but it wasn’t much of an issue:
