Welcome to the 2015 preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Sergio Garcia.

The History

It’s hard to believe that we’re actually fifteen years removed from Sergio Garcia making his name known at the 1999 PGA Championship at Medinah. Garcia, a fresh faced, 19-year old kid from a tiny town in Spain, held the lead after the opening round of the PGA that year and was only two back of Mike Weir and Tiger Woods after 54 holes. Weir plummeted down the leaderboard on Sunday when paired in the final group with Tiger, firing an 8-over par 80 to finish in a tie for 10th place, but Garcia made a charge, quite literally on the 16th.

2015 Preview: Phil Mickelson

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Phil Mickelson.

The History

If you’re reading this blog, chances are that you already know the history of Phil Mickelson, so I won’t bore you to death with the details there and instead, I’ll just take a look back at what happened in 2014, which was an incredibly interesting year for Lefty. Coming into 2014, Mickelson talked a lot about his goals for the year, namely that he wanted to complete the career grand slam by finally winning the U.S. Open, an event that he has finished as the runner-up six times. He was going to play less in 2014, opting to build his schedule around Pinehurst and to start the year, it really did look promising as he finished tied for second in Abu Dhabi. From there though, it all seemed to come apart.

2015 Preview: Rickie Fowler

Nice to have you back, Rickie.

Nice to have you back, Rickie.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Rickie Fowler.

The History

After a successful amateur career, Rickie Fowler turned pro in 2009 and made his full time debut on the PGA Tour in 2010 where his strong play led him to Rookie of the Year honours and appearing in his first ever Ryder Cup. In 2011, Fowler was able to claim his first ever professional win, taking the Kolon Korea Open and the following year, secured his first and only PGA Tour win to date at the Wells Fargo. 2013 was another decent year for Fowler, but he decided that it was time to make a change and went to Butch Harmon for help with his swing.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Matt Kuchar.

The History

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost twenty years since we saw the debut of Matt Kuchar in the professional game. Back in 1998, Kuchar was understandably looked at as one of golf’s future stars, as he was in the middle a great run at Georgia Tech and finished as the low amateur in both the Masters (T21), and the U.S. Open (T14) with his father on the bag. Two years later, he turned pro and in 2002, he picked up his first PGA Tour win at the Honda Classic. Everything was looking up for Kuchar, but then it all came to a screeching halt.

2015 Preview: Martin Kaymer

06.15.14 kaymer final putt

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Martin Kaymer.

The History

Martin Kaymer made his debut on the European Tour in 2007, and in the seven years since, there have been few players who have seen the on course highs and lows that Kaymer has. Ahead of the 2010 PGA Championship, Kaymer had won five times in Europe and was considered a young player to watch, but he certainly wasn’t expected to win that week at Whistling Straits. In the tournament that has become known more for Dustin Johnson’s “bunker” grounding, Kaymer found himself in a three-hole playoff with Bubba Watson. With both players tied after the first two holes, Watson ended up playing his second into the creek short of the 18th green, giving Kaymer the ability to lay up out of a bad lie and make par to win his first major championship.

Anyone want to guess where Billy went to school?

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Billy Horschel.

The History

After a solid college career at Florida, Horschel turned pro in 2009 and made his first impact on the PGA Tour in 2013 when he finished second to D.A. Points at the Shell Houston Open and then followed it up with a T3 in Texas and a T9 at Harbour Town, so he was definitely a player to watch as the PGA Tour made their stop the next week at the Zurich Classic. Horschel closed with a final round 64, winning with a bomb on the 18th:

2015 Preview: Jordan Spieth

12.07.14 spieth trophy

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Jordan Spieth.

The History

If it wasn’t for his age being constantly mentioned along with every utterance of his name, it would be hard to believe that Jordan Spieth was actually 21 years old, and not just because he’s losing his hair at a Furykian pace either. Spieth has always been one of those kids that was destined for stardom from an early age, and his showing as a 16-year old at the Byron Nelson where he was tied for 7th after the third round and ended up tied for 16th on Sunday, was further proof that it wouldn’t be long before we saw him on a regular basis on the PGA Tour. If it feels like we’ve been talking about him forever, it’s probably because that’s kind of what’s happened, but when you watch him play and you hear the way he speaks, you start to understand what all the hype is about.

Welcome to the 2015 Golf Preview, where I’ll take a look at selected golfers and examine what to expect over the next twelve months. Today, we look at Graeme McDowell.

The History

At 23 years of age, Graeme McDowell won just his fourth start on the European Tour at the 2002 Scandinavian Masters and over the next six years, he became a fixture on the European Tour, picking up an additional three wins including the 2008 Scottish Open and playing well at the ’08 Ryder Cup, but it wasn’t until 2010 that McDowell became a superstar.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be posting my 2014 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we look back at some of the best shots over the past twelve months.

Last year’s Shots

Whenever you hear golf commentators talk about “Shots of the Day”, in all likelihood you are about to see a shot where the ball goes in the hole. Putts, chip-ins, hole outs from the fairway or an ace are all possibilities, but what you rarely see are the ones where a player gets creative or when the situation appears to be so dire, that a quality result seems to be nearly impossible. Those are the ones I’m interested in, the ones where the pros get to show off how good they really are when it looks like they have no chance.

These are the best of those from 2014, plus a few that did drop because you can’t just ignore those entirely.
