Match play doesn’t always work

Ridiculous save number two along with the great reaction from Day.

Ridiculous save number two along with the great reaction from Day.

CBS got lucky on Sunday at Dove Mountain, as did the PGA Tour and the other governing bodies around the World Golf Championships.

Tiger Woods wasn’t in the field, neither was Phil Mickelson or Adam Scott. With three of golf’s biggest names sitting on the sidelines for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that they find the host course to be absolutely atrocious, there was a serious lack of star power at the event.

Enter Victor Dubuisson.

Nice to have you back, Rickie.

Nice to have you back, Rickie.

So, that was pretty fun, right? In case you missed it, check out the recap of the WGC-Match Play from yesterday where even though Jason Day won, the story was the crazy shot making performance of France’s Victor Dubuisson. The best moments from the week is listed below, in photos, GIFs and videos.

Jason Day wins the WGC-Accenture Match Play

Jason Day was able to take out Rickie Fowler and Victor Dubuisson on Sunday at Dove Mountain to win the 2014 WGC-Accenture Match Play.

What Happened

To be honest, not a whole lot of note happened on the final day until the very end. Day and Fowler had a spirited match in the semis, while Ernie Els couldn’t hang on to an early lead on Dubuisson, eventually giving it up on the 18th when he made bogey.

In the finals, Day jumped out to an early lead as Dubuisson just couldn’t seem to get going, much like the semis, where the Frenchman admitted that playing against one of his golfing heroes in Els got to him. Dubuisson started to settle in a little bit throughout the match, but Day didn’t relent until the final two holes. Dubuisson cut the lead to just one on the 17th, but Day had a chance to close it out on 18 when he had a nine foot putt for par.

Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and gentlemanly play

No matter where he goes or what he does, Sergio Garcia seems to makes headlines. In case you missed what happened yesterday, here’s a quick recap.

On the sixth hole of his match against Rickie Fowler, Garcia needed to call an official over for a ruling because there was a beehive right beside his ball near the sixth green, which is considered a “dangerous situation” under the Rules of Golf. The ruling took longer than it probably should have, and Garcia felt bad about that. So, on the next hole, Garcia had about six feet left for his par, while Fowler had to make one from about seventeen feet to avoid bogey. Garcia, still feeling bad about the length of the ruling on the previous hole, suggested to Fowler that they give it the “good-good” treatment and walk off the green, heading to the next tee. A video of the event is below:

With the WGC-Accenture Match Play set to go this week at Dove Mountain, I took a look at the match play records for each player across all forms of professional match play. Each player is shown below with their records in the following areas:

  • WGC-Accenture Match Play (2009-2013): This shows their record at Dove Mountain, the host course since 2009.
  • WGC-Accenture Match Play (1999-2008): This shows their record at all previous courses to host the event, dating back to 1999.
  • Presidents Cup: Singles records only from the Presidents Cup.
  • Ryder Cup: Singles records only from the Ryder Cup.
  • Other: The Cisco/Volvo World Match Play on the European Tour, as well as the Seve Trophy. Again, singles records only. Note that this doesn’t include the 1994, 1995 or 1996 Cisco Match Play, which were all won by Ernie Els. There just isn’t enough reliable data available online to include the information, but if anyone has access to it, let me know and I’ll add them in.

In addition to the table below, each player that has played in at least one match play event is clickable. Clicking on them will take you to their expanded record, showing each individual match with the event, course, opponent and final score.

Lastly, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott all qualified for the event but decided not to play. Click on their names and you can still see their full records as well.

As always, if you see any mistakes, let me know in the comments and I’ll adjust.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get around to watching much of the other tournaments this week, but the Northern Trust Open was entertaining as always thanks to Bubba Watson and the always immaculate Riviera. Here’s the best of the week from the event in GIFs and videos.

Bubba Watson finally wins another tournament

Bubba Watson was able to overcome a host of quality contenders on Sunday at Riviera to win the 2014 Northern Trust Open.

What Happened

The final group of Charlie Beljan, George McNeill and William McGirt were given very little chance by most people coming into Sunday’s final round at Riviera, and apparently those people were correct. With a stacked leaderboard of big names chasing, including Watson, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel, Jordan Spieth and Monday qualifier Jason Allred, the leaders quickly faded and made way for the star attractions.

Watson led most of the way through the back nine after getting within four shots on Saturday with a third round 64. Johnson was within one for a good chunk of the back nine, but couldn’t close the gap at any point, while Spieth and Schwartzel fell further out of contention. Allred and Brian Harman, who played with Watson, kept it respectable, but Watson was too good down the stretch. With two putts needed to close the tournament, Watson stepped up on 18 and finished it off with just one.

Jimmy Walker hangs on at Pebble

Yes, this is an otter eating a pineapple in Carmel Bay.

Jimmy Walker entered Sunday with a huge lead at Pebble Beach, and he wouldn’t give all of it up, winning by a single shot over Dustin Johnson and Jim Renner.

What Happened

When you go into a final round with a six shot advantage, you don’t usually have to do much to walk away with the victory, and Jimmy Walker wasn’t going to try and do anything that would put him in too much danger. If he went around the course in roughly level par, he was going to be very difficult to catch and that’s pretty much what he did on the front nine. The back nine however was a different story, with Walker making bogey on 10, 12, 13 and 17.
