2014 Golf Wishes

Tiger Woods (Courtesy: Zimbio.com)

When you look back at the 2013 calendar year, golf fans were pretty fortunate with what they saw. The return of Tiger Woods to the top of the world ranking, the best major year in at least a decade and the emergence of new stars that should keep the game in good hands for the foreseeable future made for some of the best action we’ve seen in years.

With that said, 2014 is on the horizon and golf can do a ton of things to both improve and build on the 2013 campaign. Here are 15 wishes of mine that I hope can come true in 2014.

2013 GIFs of the Year: Phil Mickelson

Walking out to receive the Claret Jug

Over the last two weeks, I’ve been posting my 2013 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we come to the end of the line as we take a look back at the 2013 season of Phil Mickelson.

Previous posts: The Best of Tiger WoodsThe MajorsThe ShotsThe ShanksThe ReactionsThe Laughs, The WTFs  & The Rage

Phil Mickelson had quite the year in 2013, with more highs and lows than a lot of players will see over an entire career. The near 59 at the Waste Management kicked it off, and after another runner-up finish at the U.S. Open, Mickelson did the unthinkable and actually won across the pond on back-to-back weeks at the Scottish Open and the Open Championship. Seeing Mickelson lift the Claret Jug is something I never thought I’d witness, but it’s a testament to his ever evolving game and skill set. At a time when he should be getting worse, especially with his arthritic wrists, Mickelson seems to be doing just fine and as you’ll see below, he’s as creative as he’s ever been.

If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be posting my 2013 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we look back at some of the moments that made players erupt in a fit of rage.

We all know that golf is a frustrating game, and as you’ve seen above, it definitely gives us plenty of opportunities to unleash some anger when things don’t go the way we want them to. The good news is that the pros feel the exact same way, and while it might not be fun when you feel the need to fire a club or ball into the lake, it’s bloody entertaining when you watch someone else do it.

Below are the moments from 2013 that proved that even the best players in the world feel the need to rage from time to time. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be posting my 2013 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we look back at some of the moments on and off the course from 2013 that made you ask, What The Fuck!?

As we’ve mentioned many times before, golf is a game that simply doesn’t make much sense, even to those who are the best players in the world. During a round of golf, there are likely several instances in which yourself or one of your playing partners just can’t explain what the hell just happened on the course, and the same goes for the professionals. The good news is that when this doesn’t happen to us, it can be quite entertaining or at the very least, so bad that you can’t turn away. The Jim Furyk GIF above is the perfect example of that.

Here are the best of those moments in the 2013 GIFs of the Year: The WTFs. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

Golf in most cases is a game that people take far too seriously. This goes for people at all levels, whether you play or officiate and I think that it comes from the fact that people simply forget that it is a game. Sometimes you need to laugh at the stupid stuff that happens to you, or more accurately as you’ll find in this GIF roundup, you just need to laugh at the stuff that happens to other people when they play this stupid game. These are the best of those moments, plus a few other weird instances from the past twelve months. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

How can professional golf improve?

Yesterday at Devil Ball, Shane Bacon posted a piece on his ten things that he would like to see changed in professional golf. It’s well done and worth the read without question, and if you’re one of the few who has read my blog from time to time, you know that as much as I love the game, I’m of the opinion that it’s far from perfect and that we could definitely use some change. So, I’m going to comment on a few of Shane’s suggestions and then move on to my own. Feel free to leave some of your own in the comments, or let me know on Twitter what you would change if you were in charge. Shane’s suggestions will be in bold, with my responses below.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be posting my 2013 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we look back at some of the best reactions, positive and negative, on the PGA and European Tours from 2013.

Previous posts: The Best of Tiger WoodsThe MajorsThe Shots & The Shanks

For a long time, professional golf was completely devoid of characters. Everyone, save for a few examples, pretty much went about things in the same, boring way with very little emotion shown on the course. Thankfully, those days appear to be long behind us, as this generation of players have started to actually display their anger, frustration and happiness on the course instead of just keeping their heads down and moving to the next tee. Angel Cabrera and Billy Horschel clearly lead the way in this regard, but even players like Tiger Woods and Zach Johnson have started showing more emotion out there.

I have a full post dedicated to the best golf rage moments coming up, but the below gallery shows the best reactions, positive and negative in professional golf in 2013. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

Over the next two weeks, I’ll be posting my 2013 Golf GIF Roundups, broken down into several ‘Best Of’ categories. Today, we look back at some of the worst shots and putts from 2013.

Previous posts: The Best of Tiger WoodsThe Majors & The Shots

There’s an argument to be made that of all of the professional sports, golf is the most frustrating to play at every level. One of the things that makes the game so interesting and infuriating is that after you make that birdie on the opening hole, you’re just as likely to post a triple bogey on the short par-4 second after finding the fairway from the tee. This isn’t just for you and me either, it goes for the pros that we watch every week on television. The same guys that make the incredible shots and escapes in the post above run into the bad holes just like we do. If you want a perfect example, go back to the recent World Cup of Golf, where reigning Masters champion Adam Scott put up a nine, or how on back-to-back holes, Stuart Manley managed an ace on the par-3 third and then followed it up with an eleven. Golf doesn’t make sense, and it never will.

So, with that said, I’m not posting these GIFs to make fun of the pros. These guys are the absolute best in the world at what they do and they never cease to amaze me, but it’s nice every once and a while to get a reminder that I’m not the only guy that duffs one from the middle of the fairway from time to time. Here are the best, or worst depending on your vantage point, shanks from the 2013 season. I’ve also included a couple of instances where players had to switch around and play left-handed because if you’ve ever done that, it’s pretty much the worst. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.

Whenever you hear golf commentators talk about “Shots of the Day”, in all likelihood you are about to see a shot where the ball goes in the hole. Putts, chip-ins, hole outs from the fairway or an ace are all possibilities, but what you rarely see are the ones where a player gets creative or when the situation appears to be so dire, that a quality result seems to be nearly impossible. Those are the ones I’m interested in, the ones where the pros get to show off how good they really are when it looks like they have no chance.

These are the best of those from 2013, plus a few that did drop based on other factors. If you hover over each image, you’ll get a brief description of why it made the list.
